Shanti Garman

Shanti Garman is a doctoral candidate and Lecturer at the University of Washington (UW) Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), affiliated with the Sensor Systems Lab. Her work bridges research in wireless power transfer, low-power communication, and electromagnetic systems, with applications for space missions and Earth-based technologies. She actively contributes to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in engineering.

Education:

• BSEE and MSEE from Stanford University (1999)
• MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management (2006)

• Wireless power systems for lunar/planetary missions
• Modulated Johnson noise communication
• Ambient RF energy harvesting
• Antenna design for modern wireless devices

Mentorship and Teaching: Garman instructs the course "Antennas for Modern Wireless Devices" in UW ECE's Professional Master’s Program, emphasizing practical design and simulation. She mentors first-generation students and underrepresented groups, advocating for allyship and support networks.

Labs and Teams: She works under Professor Joshua Smith in the Sensor Systems Lab, collaborating with WiBotic on lunar rover wireless systems. She co-founded WAFER (WomXn at the Forefront of ECE Research) to highlight women and nonbinary researchers.
