Shannon Monnat

Shannon Monnat is the Lerner Chair in Public Health Promotion and Population Health, Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University's Maxwell School. Her research examines spatial disparities in health outcomes, particularly the rural-urban divide in opioid mortality and 'deaths of despair'.

Her work investigates how social policies and structural disadvantage influence health behaviors and healthcare access. Current projects analyze COVID-19 impacts across geographic contexts and demographic groups.

Monnat has presented findings to major policy institutions including the National Academy of Sciences and USDA, with research featured in prominent media outlets. Recent books address challenges facing rural America and life course health dynamics.
