Mary Shannon Johnstone is a tenured Professor of Art at Meredith College whose photographic work addresses animal overpopulation and ethical treatment. Her acclaimed projects include Landfill Dogs featuring shelter dogs at reclamation sites and Breeding Ignorance documenting euthanasia procedures.
Johnstone's artistic practice combines documentary photography with social advocacy, creating visual narratives about roadside zoos, shelter systems, and interspecies relationships. Her work has been featured in ABC World News, CNN, and numerous exhibitions raising awareness about animal welfare.
She holds an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her creative research extends to alternative processes including cyanotype memorials using animal ashes.
