Dr. Shannon Heath serves as a Lecturer in English at Maryville College, affiliated with the Division of Languages & Literature. She transitioned to full-time employment as a Visiting Lecturer in 2022-2023 after starting as an adjunct instructor in 2016. Her expertise lies in 19th-century British Romanticism, particularly verse satire's intersection with ethnic stereotypes in 18th-/19th-century Britain. Her doctoral research analyzed satirical works by Robert Burns, Thomas Moore, and Lord Byron through sociocultural lenses.
Educational background: B.A. in English from Concord University (Athens, WV), M.A. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Blacksburg, VA), and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville).
Teaching philosophy emphasizes empathy and student engagement across core curriculum courses such as first-year composition (ENG 110/120), Modern Western Literature (ENG 170), Early Western Literature (ENG 160), Grammar for Syntax (ENG 121), and a specialized mid-semester course on comics/graphic novels (ENG 149).
