Shani Shastri

Shani Shastri, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, specializing in Nephrology. Originally from India, she earned her medical degree from K.J. Somaiya Medical Center in Mumbai and a Master's in Public Health from Loma Linda University. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts and a Nephrology fellowship at Tufts Medical Center, where she also obtained a Master’s in Clinical Research with a focus on epidemiology and outcomes.

Her research focuses on aging-related kidney disease, cardiovascular-kidney interactions, and critical care nephrology. Key areas include acute kidney injury in critically ill patients, pandemic-related renal complications (e.g., COVID-19), and long-term outcomes in hemodialysis populations. She has contributed to high-impact studies on ECMO use, beta-blocker efficacy in sudden cardiac death prevention, and CKD epidemiology in aging populations.

Recent publications highlight her work on: 1) Obesity and thrombotic markers in critically ill patients with COVID-19, 2) Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation outcomes, and 3) Tocilizumab treatment efficacy in severe cases.
