City University of New Yorkمعرفی
Shana Elbaum-Garfinkle, Ph.D. is an interdisciplinary scientist at The Graduate Center, CUNY, holding dual appointments as Assistant Professor in the Structural Biology Initiative and Department of Biochemistry. Her research bridges biology, physics, and engineering to investigate biomolecular phase separation and its role in neurodegenerative diseases.
- Education: B.A. in Physics from Hunter College (Thomas Hunter Honors Program), Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University
- Postdoctoral Training: Princeton University with Clifford Brangwynne
Research Focus: Explores protein/RNA granules and liquid phase separation mechanisms using C. elegans genetics, single-molecule fluorescence, and material science. Key applications include Alzheimer's disease, ALS, and traumatic brain injury therapeutics.
Recent Publication Trends: Demonstrates how peptide coacervates enhance DNA biosensor performance through localized concentration effects. Investigates epigenetic regulation of condensate material properties and tunable multiphase dynamics in neurodegenerative contexts.
- Scientific Recognition: Recipient of NIH K99/R00 award
- Patents: Co-inventor of provisional patent #63/594,358 on fluorescence-based nucleotide biosensors via liquid-liquid phase separation
Lab Activities: The Elbaum-Garfinkle Lab conducts experimental systems chemistry, employs advanced microscopy (confocal, FRAP), and develops peptide-based synthetic organelles. Collaborates with U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and Office of Naval Research.
