Shala Mills serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at State University of New York at New Paltz, where she held concurrent leadership roles as Associate Provost for Academic Planning & Learning Innovation, Dean of Graduate/Professional/Interdisciplinary Studies, and Dean of Continuing & Online Education from 2021 to 2025. Previously, she was Assistant Vice President for Graduate & Extended Learning (2017-2021) and spent two decades at Fort Hays State University in roles including Political Science Chair and Director of Liberal Education.
Her educational credentials include a B.A. in History from Baylor University (1984) and a J.D. from the University of Kansas (1988), with inactive licensure in the Kansas Bar, Federal Bar, and U.S. Supreme Court Bar. Her research critically examines global challenges, campus food insecurity, and pedagogical innovation, directly informing her teaching in law, sustainability, and food politics.

Dr. Mills demonstrates exceptional commitment to academic advising and institutional leadership, evidenced by multiple advising awards and current service on SUNY New Paltz’s Strategic Planning Committee (2024-25), Sustainability Committee, and Digital Accessibility Team. Her professional impact extends through committee work with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Mid-Atlantic Popular & American Culture Association’s Food & Culture division.
