Shahriar Selim is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering. He leads the Laboratory for Atomic and Photonic Technology, focusing on cutting-edge research in quantum optics, gravitational wave detection, and precision metrology. Selim holds multiple degrees from MIT, including a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and dual S.B. degrees in EECS and Physics.
His research spans superluminal ring lasers, quantum communication, and atomic interferometry. Notably, he contributed to the LIGO collaboration's groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes and neutron stars, as well as the measurement of the Hubble constant using gravitational wave standard sirens. His work bridges theoretical and experimental physics, addressing topics like quantum noise limits, spin-squeezing, and optomechanical systems.
Award-winning contributions include papers in Nature, Physical Review Letters, and Optics Express. His lab explores applications in atomic clocks, holographic imaging, and sensor technology, emphasizing interdisciplinary innovation. Selim's recent efforts focus on enhancing sensor precision near exceptional points and developing novel optical correlators for target recognition.
