Shahragim Tajbakhsh is a Professor and Head of the Department of Developmental & Stem Cell Biology at the Pasteur Institute in France. His research focuses on skeletal muscle stem cells, examining their commitment, self-renewal, and regeneration mechanisms during development, disease, and injury. He has led the Stem Cells & Development Unit since 2007 and directed the Laboratory of Excellence Consortium REVIVE from 2011 to 2019.
- Education: PhD in Biology (Carleton University, 1988), BSc in Biology (Carleton University, 1983), HDR (Paris XI Orsay, 2001)
His work explores genetic networks regulating myogenic stem cell emergence, asymmetric cell divisions, stem cell niches, and age-related tissue regeneration challenges. He has contributed to understanding tissuegenesis and myopathy through intravital imaging and molecular modeling.
Scientific Awards:
- French Academy of Sciences Prize / Fondation Generale de Sante (2014)
- ERC Advanced Grant (2013-2018)
- LabEx REVIVE Consortium Leadership (2011-2019)
- Vallery-Radot Prize (2010)
- EMBO Membership (2013)
- Prix Georges Zermati (2000)
Prof. Tajbakhsh has supervised 9 PhD and 9 Master's students since 1996 and participated in 25 thesis juries. He has secured major grants including the 28 M€ strategic infrastructure grant through LabEx REVIVE and reviewed for institutions like Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, CNRS, and the Wellcome Trust.
