Dr. Shahid Karim is a Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, specializing in molecular entomology and vector biology. His research focuses on tick-vector interactions with pathogens and hosts, using integrative approaches like molecular biology, genomics, and computational analysis. He holds a PhD in Molecular Entomology from the University of the Punjab (1999), an MS (1990), and BS (1986) from the same institution.
Dr. Karim teaches courses including Human Parasitology, Medical Entomology, and Bioinformatics. His work explores tick microbiomes, microRNA functions, and alpha-gal syndrome mechanisms. Recent studies investigate how blood-feeding and infections influence arthropod hemocytes, and the role of tick salivary glycans in disease transmission.
Professional affiliations include the Entomological Society of America and the Acarological Society of America. He is fluent in English, Urdu, and Punjabi. His research emphasizes vector-borne diseases, functional genomics, and tick-pathogen interactions, with publications in Frontiers in Immunology, Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases, and others.
