Shafqat Ahmad is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology at Södertörn University's Department of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies. His research focuses on integrating molecular and genetic epidemiology approaches to understand obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease pathogenesis. He combines methods from biochemistry, genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and microbiota research with lifestyle factors in large-scale studies to improve disease prediction and understanding.
He holds a PhD and has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Career Starting Research Grant from the Swedish Research Council and the Rising Star Award from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. His work has been funded by grants from FORMAS and other institutions.
Key research interests include gut microbiota composition, cardiometabolic disease biomarkers, and the interplay between genetics and lifestyle factors. He has contributed to studies on meat intake's metabolic effects, antibiotic usage impacts on microbiota, and Mediterranean diet associations with mortality.
- Awards: Docent in Molecular Epidemiology, Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation Fellow, Nutricia Research Fellow
- Grants: Swedish Research Council (2023-2026), FORMAS (2021-2024)
His research emphasizes population-based cohorts, such as SCAPIS and Swedish CardioPulmonary bioImage studies, to explore microbiome-cardiovascular links and genetic-environment interactions. Currently, he is not participating in any active projects.
