Shabnam Javdani is an Associate Professor of Applied Psychology at New York University's Steinhardt School. She holds dual roles as founding Director/PI of the RISE Research Team and Faculty Director of the NYU Prison Education Program. Her doctoral degree is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2012), followed by an APA-approved clinical internship at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research focuses on reducing inequality-driven mental health/legal disparities through three core areas: pathways to violence in youth/adults, systemic responses to inequality, and intervention development targeting marginalized communities.
Key research emphasizes gendered dynamics in criminal justice systems, trauma influences, and policy reform. Methodologically, she employs mixed-methods approaches emphasizing social justice values. Her signature NYC ROSES program uses strengths-based advocacy to address girls' systemic barriers. Collaborations include Vera Institute of Justice to end girls' incarceration and development of SAFE Spaces staff training for incarcerated youth.
Her work spans over 40 peer-reviewed articles since 2011 across journals like American Journal of Community Psychology and Psychology, Public Policy, and Law. Methodological innovations include the 'critical case file approach' and values-forward mixed-methods frameworks. Current projects address racial/gender disparities in juvenile justice, sexual/reproductive health among justice-involved girls, and trauma-informed policy solutions.
