Marina Andrianovna Shabanova is a Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Department of Applied Economics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), and a Leading Researcher at the Center for Civil Society and Non-Profit Sector Research. With 38 years of scientific and teaching experience, she has been working at HSE since 2000, making significant contributions to socioeconomics, ethical consumption, and civil society studies in Russia.
Shabanova earned her Doctor of Sociological Sciences degree in 2000 from the Institute of Economics and Industrial Organization of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. She received her Candidate of Economic Sciences degree in 1988 and completed postgraduate studies at the same institute in 1986. She graduated from Novosibirsk State University in 1981 with a degree in Economics, specializing in Economic Cybernetics, with the qualification of Economist-mathematician.
Her research focuses on socioeconomics, ethical consumption, civil society development, and waste management practices in Russia. She has conducted extensive empirical research on consumer behavior, particularly examining how ethical consumption functions as a sphere of civil society and how it relates to social responsibility and sustainable development. Her work often explores the intersection between market practices and civil society, analyzing how new consumer practices emerge and evolve in the Russian context.
Her recent publications (2019-2025) demonstrate a clear trajectory of research on ethical consumption as a form of civil society activity, waste management practices, and digital transformation of consumer behavior. These works consistently examine how individual consumer practices connect to broader social mechanisms and civil society development in Russia. Her research shows how ethical consumption operates as both an indicator and resource for civil society transformation, with particular attention to solidarity practices, food waste reduction, and separate waste collection.
