Professor Seung Sae Hong is a materials scientist at the University of California, Davis, leading the Hong Lab in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering within the College of Engineering. His research focuses on two-dimensional (2D) materials, particularly oxide membranes, exploring their electromagnetic properties and applications in energy-efficient electronics. Key areas include designing low-dimensional materials, studying emergent phases from correlated electrons, and developing novel synthesis methods for freestanding crystalline films.
Notable achievements include the 2021 NSF CAREER Award and multiple student accolades, such as Hudson’s 2023 Amiya Mukherjee Fellowship and Huijue’s 2024 Sangtae Kim Memorial Award. The lab has also produced impactful work on topotactic phase transitions and strain engineering in SrTiO3 and SrCoOx membranes.
Professor Hong advises a diverse team of graduate and undergraduate researchers, including recent additions like Izoah (2024) and Jieyang (2022). His work bridges fundamental materials science with applied technologies, leveraging advanced microscopy and characterization techniques.
