Dr. Rabbi Seth (Avi) Kadish teaches medieval Jewish philosophy, history and exegesis at Oranim Academic College of Education and in the Overseas School at the University of Haifa. He holds a Ph.D. in Medieval Jewish Philosophy from the University of Haifa, an M.A. in Bible and Jewish education from Yeshiva University, and received rabbinic ordination (semicha) from Yeshiva University's RIETS.
His scholarly work centers on medieval Jewish thought, with particular focus on Rabbi Shimon ben Zemah Duran and the School of Rabbenu Nissim Gerondi. Kadish has authored two significant books: Kavvana: Directing the Heart in Jewish Prayer which examines intentionality in Jewish prayer traditions, and The Book of Abraham: Rabbi Shimon ben Zemah Duran and the School of Rabbenu Nissim Gerondi which analyzes medieval interpretations of Abraham's religious journey.
His recent publications explore the midrashic Parable of the Illuminated Palace concerning Abraham's discovery of God, presenting both rationalistic approaches influenced by Maimonides and Aristotelian philosophy, as well as experiential approaches emphasizing a living relationship with the divine. This dual perspective demonstrates his comprehensive understanding of how Jewish thinkers throughout history have approached fundamental questions of faith.
