Serkan Gunay

Serkan Gunay is an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture and Interior Design at the Canadian University of Dubai. His academic background includes a PhD in Architecture from Oxford Brookes University, an architecture degree from IZTECH, and a Conservation Specialist qualification from METU.

Dr. Gunay's research focuses on the digitalization of lost architecture and urban areas, particularly in contested heritage settlements. His work explores the impact of contestation on heritage, memory, and identity, utilizing Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Image-Based Modeling, Photogrammetric Modeling, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality. His research bridges architectural conservation with cutting-edge digital technologies to preserve cultural heritage.

His publications from 2010 to 2017 demonstrate a consistent focus on applying digital tools to heritage conservation. Key themes include 3D visualization of historic structures, GIS-based urban conservation projects, and analysis of decay in historic masonry. His work spans case studies in diverse locations such as Bursa (Turkey), Deira and Bur Dubai (UAE), and Wroclaw (Poland), highlighting a global perspective on architectural heritage preservation.

Dr. Gunay is a member of the Chamber of Architects Izmir, Turkey, and has taught Architecture, Design, and Creative Industries courses at universities in Turkey, Oman, USA, UAE, and UK. His professional experience includes architectural design and heritage regeneration projects.
