Sergios-Orestis Kolokotronis

Sergios-Orestis Kolokotronis is an Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University with joint appointments in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (School of Public Health), Medicine (Infectious Diseases), and Cell Biology. His lab focuses on evolutionary genomics of pathogens and microbiome dynamics.

Research examines pathogen evolution and adaptation using genomics and bioinformatics, with focus areas including Lyme disease mechanisms, antimicrobial resistance, and urban microbiome ecology. Key organisms studied include RNA viruses, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, malaria parasites, and tick microbiomes.

Recent publications investigate structural determinants of host tropism in Borrelia, metagenomic analysis of contaminated environments, and phylogenomic diversity in vector-borne disease systems. Teaching includes undergraduate and graduate courses in genomics and evolutionary biology.
