Sergio Granados-Focil is a Professor of Chemistry at Clark University, specializing in polymer science and materials engineering. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry/Materials Science from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. His postdoctoral research at UMass-Amherst focused on polymer electrolytes before joining Clark in 2008.
His research focuses on polymer-based materials for energy storage (e.g., solid-state batteries), sustainable building materials (adaptive phase change materials), CO₂ capture, and thermal energy systems. Key projects include NSF-funded studies on solid polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries and adaptive building enclosures, as well as U.S. DoD-funded thermal battery systems for extreme environments.
He teaches courses such as organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and the science of fermentation. His lab’s work spans ion transport mechanisms, smart materials design, and sustainable chemistry applications. He has authored numerous publications in journals like Journal of the Electrochemical Society and ACS Sensors.
Granados-Focil has secured grants from NSF, DoD, and other agencies, supporting interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of materials science and environmental engineering.
