Sergio Batista is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on dynamic modelling of multi-modal transportation systems, traffic flow models, network equilibrium, and travel behavior. He serves on the Scientific Committees of major transportation conferences such as MT-ITS, TRISTAN, and hEART, and reviews for top-tier journals. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Lyon (2018), with prior degrees in Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Porto. His work bridges advanced mathematics with urban mobility challenges, including decarbonization and aging population mobility.
Education:
- PhD in Civil Engineering (Transportation), University of Lyon, 2015-2018
- Master's and Undergraduate Studies in Physics and Applied Mathematics, University of Porto, Portugal
Research Interests: Dynamic traffic assignment, aggregated traffic models, macroscopic fundamental diagrams (MFD), urban mobility decarbonization, and mobility solutions for aging populations. His methodologies integrate operational research, variational theory, and Gaussian processes to optimize transportation networks and predict traffic dynamics.
Professional Contributions: Developed a dynamic traffic assignment pipeline and heuristic models for mobility patterns. Active in academic service, including conference organization and journal reviewing. Currently seeking PhD students to advance research in multi-modal transportation systems.
Labs/Teams: Leads a research group at Imperial College focusing on sustainable urban mobility and advanced traffic modelling techniques.
