Sergey Foss is a Professor in the School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, with a joint affiliation in the Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics department. He previously held a professorship at Novosibirsk State University (until 2000) and is a Leading Scientific Researcher at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics (on leave). His expertise spans stochastic processes, queueing theory, and applications in telecommunications and risk analysis.
Education: MSc in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics from Novosibirsk State University (1975), PhD in Extremal Problems in Queueing Theory (1982), and DSc in Stochastic Recursive Sequences and Their Applications (1992).
Research focuses on stability, optimization, and long-range dependence in stochastic processes. He has developed methods like the fluid approximation approach and renovation method. Recent work includes spatial stochastic models, percolation theory, and heavy-tailed processes in wireless networks.
His publications (133 total) emphasize probabilistic analysis and applications. Notable recent contributions include studies on last passage percolation, heavy-tailed processes, and contagion models in networks.
He organized the SCS Programme at the Isaac Newton Institute (2010) and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through his research.
