Sergey B. Fomel is the Wallace E. Pratt Professor of Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin, affiliated with both the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Bureau of Economic Geology under the Jackson School of Geosciences. He also holds a joint appointment with the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences.
- PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University (2001)
- Director of the Texas Consortium for Computational Seismology (TCCS)
- Creator of open-source projects 'Madagascar' and 'SEGTeX'
His research focuses on computational geophysics, including seismic imaging, wave propagation, inverse problems, and machine learning for seismic data analysis. He has pioneered methods for seismic data processing, such as predictive painting, path-summation migration, and regularization strategies for seismic inversion.
He has served in leadership roles such as Vice President for Publications at SEG (2017-2019), Chair of SEG's Publications Committee (2019-2021), and Associate Editor for multiple journals. His former advisees hold positions at institutions like Stanford University, Chevron, and Schlumberger.
- Current awards include multiple SEG Best Paper/Poster recognitions and honorary memberships in SEG and GSH
- Developed educational tools and software used globally in geophysics
- Teaches advanced courses in seismic data processing and computational methods
