Serge Paugam is a Research Professor at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) and a Director of Research at CNRS. He leads the Maurice Halbwachs Center, focusing on social inequalities and solidarity.
His research spans two core domains: social disqualification (multidimensional poverty and normative disintegration) and social attachment theory (four types of social bonds: filiation, elective participation, organic participation, and citizenship). He investigates how these bonds intersect in socialization processes and how societies establish normative coherence through "attachment regimes" (familialist, voluntarist, organicist, universalist).
Recent publications analyze affluent neighborhood segregation (2022), social disqualification in employment (2023), and comparative studies across 35 countries. His 2023 book L'Attachement social expands on human solidarity mechanisms.
Collaborations span universities in Switzerland, Canada, USA, Brazil, Japan, and Korea. He supervises doctoral students including Marton Angyan, Valeria Ayola Betancourt, and Anne-Léa Bauquis.
Appointments include membership in the High Council for Family, Children and the Elderly (2021). Media engagements appear in France Inter, France Culture, and documentaries on solidarity dynamics (2023).
