Dr. Serena Hong serves as a Lecturer for the Physiotherapy program within the School of Health Sciences/Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). With over 20 years of clinical experience as a Senior Physiotherapist specializing in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, particularly in Cardiothoracic Surgery and ICU settings at Liverpool Hospital, she brings substantial practical expertise to her academic role.
Dr. Hong earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney in 2019, focusing on Physiotherapy and Cardiac Surgery, and completed her Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) at the same institution.
Her primary research focus lies within the cardiovascular stream, particularly Cardiothoracic Surgery. Recent projects include prehabilitation studies for older and frail persons undergoing cardiac surgery and post-hip fracture rehabilitation in elderly patients. As an Education Focus lecturer, she is actively involved in interprofessional education research within the School of Health Sciences and welcomes collaboration in other cardiorespiratory-related research areas including respiratory, critical care, and surgical rehabilitation.
Dr. Hong has secured research funding including a 2024 EF Grant ($3,000) to present at the ANZAPHE conference and 2023 School of Health Science Seed Funding ($7,491.90). Her methodological expertise spans quantitative approaches (including Randomized Controlled Trials) and qualitative methodologies such as Systematic Reviews with meta-analysis and surveys.

As an Education Focus lecturer, Dr. Hong employs case-based and experiential learning with innovative digital technologies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes, with particular emphasis on developing reflection, empathy, professionalism, and communication skills essential for clinical practice.
