Serena Butler-Johnson

Dr. Serena Butler-Johnson serves as Director of the Counseling and Wellness Center at the University of the District of Columbia while holding an academic appointment as Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at George Washington University. She concurrently contributes as faculty to the DC Department of Behavioral Health – St. Elizabeth’s Psychiatry Residency Training Program, demonstrating leadership across clinical administration, policy development, and strategic mental health service delivery.

Her educational background includes:

• Doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D.) from The George Washington University
• Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Emory University

Dr. Butler-Johnson specializes in accessible mental healthcare for underserved, BIPOC, and marginalized populations through an integrative therapeutic approach blending psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, and client-centered methodologies. Her research focuses on creative arts applications in therapy, clinical supervision frameworks, first-generation student challenges, relational dynamics, depression/anxiety interventions, and holistic wellness incorporating movement/nutrition. As a Certified Cardio Sports Instructor, she uniquely bridges physical activity with psychological health.

Her professional recognition includes:

• Elected Board membership in the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD)

With extensive grant writing expertise and program development experience, she has previously directed health services, disability services, and peer education initiatives while serving as Assistant Vice President for Student Wellness. Her strategic planning acumen shapes institutional mental health policies and accessible service models.

The UDC Counseling and Wellness Center under her leadership operates as a comprehensive hub providing culturally responsive care, crisis intervention, and preventative programming tailored to diverse student needs across Van Ness Campus.
