Dr. Seo-Kyung Chung is an Associate Professor in molecular neuroscience and genomics at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health, leading the Translational Neurogenomics Research Group at Kids Research, Children’s Hospital at Westmead. She is also affiliated with the Brain and Mind Centre. Her research focuses on pediatric neurological disorders, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as 3D brain organoids, bioinformatics, and functional genomics. She has extensive experience in identifying genetic variants linked to epilepsy syndromes, startle disorder (hyperekplexia), and LQTS syndrome, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications (h-index 35, 4,000+ citations).
Dr. Chung holds a BSc (Hons 1st) from the University of Auckland and a PhD from Swansea University. She is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and recipient of the prestigious Epilepsy Research UK Fellowship (2011–2014). Her work bridges clinical and experimental research, with a focus on developing novel methodologies for gene discovery and functional variant analysis.
- Education:
- BSc (Hons 1st), University of Auckland
- PhD in Neurogenomics, Swansea University
- Research Themes:
- Neurodevelopmental disorders
- Genetic epilepsy mechanisms
- Next-generation sequencing applications
Her current projects include studying alternative splicing in brain development, functional characterization of genetic variants, and developing high-throughput analysis tools. She supervises research students and has trained over 27 PhD/Masters students and 20 visiting scholars. Collaborative grants include NHMRC funding for epilepsy and tubulinopathy research.
Dr. Chung’s awards reflect her impact in epilepsy research, including the 2012 ‘Rising Star in Translational Epilepsy Research’ recognition. Her work has expanded understanding of rare genetic disorders and their molecular underpinnings, with clinical applications in precision medicine.
