Selim KANAT

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selim Kanat is a full-time Associate Professor at Süleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, serving in the Department of International Relations and the Department of International Law since 2023. He has continuously progressed through the academic ranks at the same university since 2002, previously holding positions as Doctor Lecturer (2011–2023) and Research Assistant (2002–2011).

His educational background comprises:

Assoc. Prof. Kanat’s research agenda is anchored in international security, terrorism studies, NATO and EU affairs, human rights, and political history. He explores how security concepts evolve in response to globalization, pandemics, artificial intelligence, and irregular migration, frequently integrating theoretical debates with empirical case studies from Central Asia, the European Union, and Turkey.

Over the past five years, his publications have clustered around three thematic axes: (1) technology and security—examining AI’s impact on international security and surveillance societies; (2) border and migration governance—analyzing enclave disputes in the Fergana Valley and EU migration policy; and (3) critical re-assessments of traditional security paradigms—especially after COVID-19 and within liberal institutional frameworks.

In addition to scholarly articles, he has co-authored or edited four books released in 2024, including “Cumhuriyet’in Yüzyılında Türkiye Yüzyılı” and “ABD Büyük (Grand) Stratejisi”, and serves as editor for national and international congress proceedings.

Administratively, he has served as:

• Deputy Director of the Institute (2020–2025)
• Director and Deputy Director of Research & Application Centers (2019–2023)
• Head of Department and Vice-Head of Department multiple terms (2011–ongoing)

He currently teaches courses such as European Union Law, Scientific Research Methods and Publication Ethics, International Security Theories, and International Terrorism, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in these domains.
