Sedat İnan is Professor in the Department of Geological Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, specializing in petroleum geology and basin modeling. His research examines hydrocarbon generation, seismic precursors, and unconventional resource evaluation, with field studies in Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Antarctica.
He holds a PhD from The Pennsylvania State University and has industry experience as Chief Researcher at Saudi Aramco (2012-2019).
İnan's research integrates geochemical analysis with geophysical methods to characterize source rocks, fluid migration, and tectonic processes. Key areas include pyrolysis techniques for maturity assessment, mud volcanism mechanisms, and earthquake-related hydrogeochemical anomalies. His work supports energy exploration in complex basins like the South Caspian and Zagros.
His publications demonstrate consistent methodological innovation in organic geochemistry, particularly in decontaminating samples and refining thermal maturity indicators. Recent articles focus on source rock kinetics, fluid-tectonic interactions, and geohazard monitoring.
He has supervised multiple PhD theses on reservoir characterization and basin evolution. Funded projects include investigations of spring water anomalies post-earthquakes and hydrocarbon potential in Libyan and Turkish basins. İnan teaches courses in petroleum geology, well logging, and fossil fuels engineering.
