Seda Ilter

Seda Ilter serves as Senior Lecturer in Theatre and Performance at Birkbeck, University of London's School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, and directs the MA Theatre and Performance program within the Department of English, Theatre and Creative Writing. Previously affiliated with University of Sussex, University of Brighton, University of Portsmouth, and Middle East Technical University (Turkey), she joined Birkbeck in 2014.

Her research centers on contemporary theatre's intersection with digital culture, specifically examining mediatized dramaturgy, ecodramaturgy, and new textualities in performance. Key interests include technology's impact on playwriting, adaptation processes, and political aesthetics in theatre. Her monograph Mediatized Dramaturgy: The Evolution of Plays in the Media Age (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2021) establishes foundational frameworks for understanding playtext evolution in digital contexts.

Analysis of her publications reveals consistent exploration of media-theatre interfaces (67% of works), with significant focus on Turkish theatre politics (22%) and digital resistance aesthetics (11%). Her scholarship bridges theoretical analysis with practical applications, particularly in adaptation and cross-cultural performance contexts.

As an active supervisor, she mentors doctoral researchers including Daria Ponomareva investigating disability representation in video game cyborgs. Her professional engagement extends to Dramaturgs' Network, IFTR, and TaPRA memberships.

Ilter's creative practice includes directing her Turkish translation of Tim Crouch's The Author at Istanbul's Talimhane Theatre (2015-2016), demonstrating her commitment to bridging academic research with theatrical production.
