Sebastien Mouchet is a Honorary Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Exeter (UK) and University of Namur (Belgium). He holds academic positions in the Department of Physics and Astronomy (Exeter) and Department of Physics (UNamur). His research focuses on structural coloration, photonic crystals, and biomimetic engineering, blending physics, chemistry, and biology to explore natural optical phenomena.
Education:
- PhD in Sciences (2015): University of Namur, thesis on structural color mechanisms
- Master of Science (2011): University of Namur, structural color studies
- Bachelor of Science (2009): University of Namur
Research Interests: Sebastien investigates interferential coloration in organisms, photonic crystal properties, and optical modeling. His work spans from fundamental studies of light-matter interactions to applied projects like bioinspired infrared absorbers and bird-safe glazing. He employs techniques like microspectrophotometry, ellipsometry, and fieldwork-based microscopy.
Recognition:
- 10th Charles Courtoy Prize (2023) for best PhD in Physics at UNamur
- National/international honors including the 2018 Biomimetics Travel Award
- Recipient of Agathon De Potter Fund grants (2016, 2018)
Grants & Projects:
- BEWARE-IRAbsorber (2021–2024): Mid-infrared radiation control
- POC-B-Safe: Bird-safe window coatings
Teaching & Outreach: Delivered lectures on 'Natural photonics and colours' at UNamur, participated in initiatives promoting women in science (e.g., 2023 UNamur Women in Science event). Active in public outreach via Twitter, ResearchGate, and conferences.
