Sebastien Charles Roger Simon

Sébastien Charles Roger Simon is a permanent Researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), based at the Ugelstad Laboratory since 2006. With over 20 years of experience in colloid chemistry, his work spans petroleum systems, emulsions, and biopolymer applications.

Simon earned his PhD in polymer chemistry from the University of Rouen (France) in 2003, focusing on amphiphilic polysaccharides. His academic journey included postdoctoral research at the French Petroleum Institute (IFP) on crude oil asphaltenes before joining NTNU.

His research encompasses three primary domains:

• Flow Assurance: Solving calcium naphthenate deposition, asphaltene precipitation, and wax crystallization challenges in oil production
• Emulsion Science: Pioneering interfacial rheology studies of water-in-oil systems using NMR and advanced characterization
• Biopolymer Innovation: Developing nanocellulose and lignosulfonate applications for enhanced oil recovery and food systems

Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a strategic shift toward interdisciplinary solutions, merging petroleum engineering with food science through biopolymer research while maintaining core expertise in interfacial phenomena critical to flow assurance.

Simon has co-supervised 41 students (including 9 PhD candidates) through industrial collaborations with key partners:
