Dr. Sebastian Matzner is a Reader in Ancient & Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at King’s College London’s Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. He holds a PhD in Classics and Comparative Literature from King’s (2012), with a thesis recognized by the University of Heidelberg’s Prize for Classical Philology and Literary Theory. His academic career includes positions as Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Oxford (2012–14), P.S. Allen Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College (2012–14), and lectureships in Classics at Oxford and Latin at Exeter before returning to King’s in 2015.
Matzner’s research bridges Classics, Comparative Literature, and Theology/Religious Studies, focusing on ancient-modern literary interactions. Key interests include classical receptions, queer theory, and the poetics of acculturation. He has edited major volumes like *Metalepsis: Ancient Texts, New Perspectives* (2020) and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the *International Journal of the Classical Tradition*. He co-convenes presentPasts, an interdisciplinary network studying cultural interactions across time.
His scholarship emphasizes longue durée perspectives, juxtaposing ancient and modern texts to address contemporary debates. Recent work explores activist-in-residence programs in academia and the role of queer theory in classical studies. Matzner has been a member of Berlin-Brandenburg Academy’s Young Academy (2017–22) and directs Queer@King’s, fostering LGBTQ+ inclusivity. His teaching integrates ancient and modern texts to challenge modern theoretical frameworks.
