Dr. Sebastian Lequime is an Assistant Professor specializing in Virus Ecology and Evolution at the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES), part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen. He leads an independent research group investigating the ecology and evolution of viruses through integrated wet-lab experiments, bioinformatics, and computational modeling.
His research focuses on:
- RNA virus genomics across evolutionary scales
- Viral emergence and transmission dynamics
- Host-virus interactions and coevolution
- Virus discovery methodologies
- Application of FAIR data principles in virology
Lequime's publication record demonstrates consistent focus on viral evolution mechanisms, with recent work emphasizing endogenous viral elements and their impact on virus discovery. His group develops computational tools for genomic analysis while maintaining strong fieldwork components.
Awards and recognitions include:
- Beijerinck Premium (2021) for virology research
- Pieter Langerhuizen Stipendium (2021)
- UG Open Research Award (2021)
- Prix pour les Jeunes Chercheurs (2017)
He coordinates Master's courses in Evolutionary Medicine and Ecological Genomics, and supervises Bachelor and Master research projects. As head of the Lequime Lab, he oversees projects on honeybee viruses and flavivirus evolution funded by external grants.
