Sebastian Krantz

Sebastian Krantz is a Junior Fellow at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, affiliated with the Research Center International Development and the Africa Initiative. Having completed his PhD in November 2024, he maintains the Africa Monitor Platform he created and continues research through his fellowship.

His research centers on macroeconomics, global and regional value chains, and infrastructure development with specialized focus on geospatial intelligence, optimal infrastructure policy, and spatial planning in Africa. He bridges economic theory with data-driven methodologies to address developmental challenges across the continent.

Recent publications reveal strong emphasis on applying geospatial big data and causal machine learning to infrastructure planning, alongside analyses of trade integration in the East African Community and macroeconomic stability. His work consistently spans development economics, data science, and policy-oriented research.
