Dr. Sebastian Elischer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on democratization, political institutions, and identity politics in Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on ethnic conflict, political Islam, and state governance. He has published extensively on these topics, including two major monographs with Cambridge University Press.
Education includes a PhD from Jacobs University Bremen, an MIS from George Washington University, an MA from Free University Berlin, and a BA from the University of Wales/Aberystwyth. His research examines how identities shape political dynamics across Africa, with field research spanning multiple countries including Kenya, Niger, and Mali.
Recent publications explore emerging trends in African security landscapes, including military coups, jihadist movements, and youth political engagement. His 2021 book Salafism and Political Order in Africa was named one of Foreign Affairs' best books of 2022. Research has been supported by grants from the Gerda Henkel Foundation, UF Humanities Scholarship Enhancement Fund, and American Political Science Association.
Honors include the Young Investigator Award (1999) and Clinical Research Awards (1998, 1997). He serves as editor for the African Studies Review and previously co-edited the Africa Yearbook. Dr. Elischer provides advisory services to German governmental agencies and contributes public commentary through outlets including Foreign Affairs and The Conversation.
