معرفی
Sebastiaan Swart is a Professor in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on understanding polar ocean processes, particularly air-sea-ice interactions and their role in biogeochemical cycles. He specializes in using autonomous vehicles like ocean gliders for observations in remote regions such as the Southern Ocean Marginal Ice Zone. Swart has participated in 12 research cruises and served as Chief Scientist on four Antarctic expeditions. He currently co-chairs the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), emphasizing global observing system development. His work addresses critical gaps in understanding ocean dynamics, climate feedbacks, and the impacts of environmental change on polar regions.
Swart’s expertise spans submesoscale ocean processes, carbon sequestration, and the integration of advanced observational techniques. He collaborates internationally to improve satellite and in situ data accuracy, particularly for high-frequency air-sea flux measurements. Recent studies highlight anomalous CO2 sinks in the subpolar Southern Ocean linked to sea ice retreat and challenges in resolving Agulhas Current dynamics using satellite data. His research also explores oxygen minimum zones in the Arabian Sea and Antarctic water mass variability.
Key contributions include advancing uncrewed surface vehicle applications, refining ocean glider sampling strategies, and promoting global standards for ocean surface radiation measurements. Swart’s interdisciplinary approach bridges physical oceanography, biogeochemistry, and climate science, with implications for climate modeling and policy-relevant research through initiatives like SOOS.
