Professor Mitchell's research centers on the politics of inequality, particularly in Brazil. His work spans multiple interconnected themes including space travel and technology, the formation of political consciousness, comparative class and race politics, US empire, war and violence, anti-corruption politics, and utopian thought. His ethnographic approach reveals how historical contexts shape contemporary understandings of social inequality and political action. Mitchell's work demonstrates how seemingly disparate topics like space programs and racial politics are fundamentally connected through structures of power and inequality.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on Brazilian society, particularly examining the experiences of marginalized communities and the politics of inequality. Mitchell frequently analyzes how concepts like the "new middle class" are constructed and deployed in political discourse, and how anti-corruption movements intersect with class and racial politics. His work on Alcântara spaceport demonstrates how technological projects become sites for negotiating sovereignty, land rights, and racial justice.

Professor Mitchell is deeply engaged with the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights and the International Institute for Peace. His work with quilombola communities in Alcântara demonstrates his commitment to research that supports marginalized communities fighting for land rights and sovereignty. His long-term ethnographic work in Brazil has established him as a leading scholar on the intersections of space, race, and inequality in contemporary Brazil.
