Sean Singh Matharoo is an Assistant Professor of French at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research bridges 20th/21st-century French/Francophone studies with comparative literature, energy humanities, and critical theory. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature (2020) and M.A. (2016) from UC Riverside, and a B.A. in English from the University of Florida (2011). His current projects explore energy poetics and glitch aesthetics through interdisciplinary frameworks.
Research interests include:
- Anthropocenic energy crisis & speculative thinking
- Maghrebian/Mauritian literature/film
- Surrealism, new novel, and OuLiPo
- Video games, comic books, and glitch studies
- Race, coloniality, and post-apocalyptic narratives
Publications span French Studies, ecocriticism, and science fiction analysis, often combining literary texts with philosophy and digital media. His work appears in Ecozon@, Green Letters, and Horror Studies. He collaborates with Energy Lab Today and Vision Inclusive, and creates noise music reflecting his scholarly themes.
Teaching focuses on structuralism, energy humanities, and interdisciplinary approaches. Awards include the 2023 Graduate Romance Association Mentorship Award and a Fulbright U.S. Student Grant (2017-18).
