Sean Shieh is a Full Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science, Western University. His research focuses on planetary processes and materials, particularly through mineral physics and high-pressure/high-temperature experiments. He utilizes advanced techniques like synchrotron X-ray, Raman, and IR spectroscopy to study Earth and planetary interiors, material characterization, and material-fluid interactions.
Recent publications highlight his work on thermal conductivity of planetary materials, shock effects in lunar minerals, pressure-induced phase transitions, and crystal structure evolution under extreme conditions. His studies span planetary science, geophysics, and material science, with applications to planetary interiors and impact processes.
Professor Shieh is affiliated with the Richard W. Hutchinson Geoscience Collaborative Suite, which houses national-caliber mineral and ore deposit collections for research and public outreach. He supervises graduate students in Earth Sciences and contributes to training through courses like Introduction to Geochemistry and Advanced Mineral Physics.
