Safford's research centers on economic sociology, social change, technical innovations, economic development, and networks, with emphasis on historical social network analysis in mature industrial economies. His work examines how social capital and institutions shape economic transformations, particularly in declining industrial regions, and extends to corporate diversity initiatives and organizational strategies in globalization contexts.
His scholarly output reveals consistent thematic evolution from Rust Belt urban decline studies to contemporary analyses of employee affinity groups and globalization's institutional impacts. Recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary engagement spanning economic sociology, organizational theory, and political economy, with methodological emphasis on historical network analysis.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Sage-Louis Pondy Prize for Best Paper from a Dissertation, Academy of Management (2004)
- Ronald Burt Award for Best Paper from a Dissertation, American Sociological Association (2004)
