Sean P Mullen is an Associate Professor in the Kinesiology & Community Health Department at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, also affiliated with the Beckman Institute and the Center for Social & Behavioral Science. He earned his PhD in Exercise Psychology from the University of Virginia in 2009.
His research focuses on understanding factors that sustain long-term physical activity and self-regulation across the lifespan, using interdisciplinary approaches combining social neuroscience and technology. He directs the Exercise Technology & Cognition Laboratory, which explores how technology-enhanced interventions improve physical activity and cognitive performance.
Recent work includes studies on exercise breaks in classroom settings, vocal interventions for older adults, and the impact of 24-hour movement guidelines on youth academic engagement. Key themes include cognitive neuroscience applications in physical activity, technology-mediated behavioral change, and aging-related cognitive health.
Mullen has published extensively in journals like Advanced Science, Journal of Affective Disorders, and International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology. He serves on editorial boards for Psychology of Sport and Exercise and Annals of Behavioral Medicine.
