Sean Freeland is an Assistant Professor of Education at Carlow University, specializing in mathematics education and equity-focused pedagogy. His work bridges identity research, practice-based teaching strategies, and systemic challenges in rural Appalachia. He previously served as a mathematics teacher and basketball coach at University High School in Morgantown, WV, and as Curriculum Coordinator/District Assistant Director for the Health Sciences & Technology Academy (HSTA) at West Virginia University.

Sean’s research centers on mathematics identities, equity in education, and practice-based teacher training. His publications explore racial dynamics in Appalachian classrooms, teacher leadership, and pandemic-era educational adaptations. He has presented at conferences like the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) and the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA).
