Scott Varagona is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Montevallo, where he has worked for approximately 12 years. He began his academic career at UM as an Assistant Professor, earned tenure as an Associate Professor, and was later promoted to full Professor. A graduate of Auburn University, he holds a B.S. and B.A. (2005), M.S. (2008), and Ph.D. (2012) in Mathematics.

Dr. Varagona’s research interests bridge mathematics and chess, particularly through graph theory. He created and teaches an interdisciplinary course titled “Mathematics of Chess,” exploring these connections. His academic work emphasizes teaching at a small liberal arts institution with a focus on personalized education and innovative course design.
He is also a prominent figure in chess competitions, having won multiple Alabama State Chess Championships and achieving the rank of Original Life Master. His memorable experiences at UM include participating in the Life Raft Debate for seven consecutive years, winning as the “devil’s advocate” in 2015, and fostering close relationships with students in small-class settings.
