Scott McCarrey

Scott McCarrey is a Professor of Music at Brigham Young University–Hawaii in the College of Language, Culture and Arts, Department of Music. He has served at BYU–Hawaii since 1996, advancing from Assistant Professor (1996–2007) to Associate Professor (2007–2014) and Professor (2014–present), while also holding administrative roles including Associate Dean of the College of Language, Culture and Arts (2008–2016) and Chair of the Fine Arts Department (2002–2008) and Music Department (1999–2001).

His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Performance and Analysis from York University (2006), an M.M. in Piano Performance and Literature from Indiana University (1995), and a B.M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Brigham Young University (1991). His research focuses on French piano music performance and analysis, particularly Ravel and Debussy, evidenced by his co-edited volume "Perspectives on the Performance of French Piano Music" (2014) and the award-winning CD recording "Scenes from an Australian Childhood" (2015).

McCarrey's scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with performance-practice intersections in French repertoire, with publications reviewed in major journals including Musical Times and Revue de musicologie. His creative work bridges academic analysis and artistic interpretation, notably through commissioned premieres and international conference organization.

He has received significant recognition including the Association for Recorded Sound Collections Certificate of Merit (2015) and multiple academic scholarships. His service includes directing the piano program, founding the Youth Conservatory (2006), and artistic leadership for "Evening of Concertos" collaborations with the Hawai‘i Symphony.

As an active performer, McCarrey maintains an international concert schedule with recent performances including the Hawai‘i Symphonic Band collaborations (2023–2024) and Asian tours, while continuing devotional speaking and committee service at BYU–Hawaii as documented in his June 2024 CV update.
