Lunsford's research and teaching focuses on the intersections of language use, public rhetorics, multimodality, and digital scholarship. He is particularly known for his work analyzing graffiti on public surfaces as forms of anonymous expression and for developing audio projects that explore the rhetorical nature of sonic environments. His scholarship often examines how people use unsanctioned surfaces for meaning-making, including his documented observations of his daughters' early literacy practices.
His recent publications reveal a strong trajectory in sonic rhetorics and multimodal composition, with significant contributions to audio scholarship and studies of public writing practices. Lunsford's work frequently appears in journals dedicated to multimodal rhetorics and digital composition, demonstrating his commitment to expanding scholarly communication beyond traditional print formats.
Lunsford co-hosts the podcast Hidden Language and created the family podcast Breed Cry Create with his children, demonstrating his belief in the scholarly value of audio production as a form of research and expression. His approach to scholarship blurs the boundaries between academic research and creative practice, particularly in how he documents and analyzes everyday rhetorical practices in public spaces.
