Scott Kogan is a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and a leading hematopathologist at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of California San Francisco. With 24 years of clinical experience, he specializes in diagnosing lymphomas, leukemias, and hematologic disorders while directing the Histology and Biomarker Core of the UCSF HDFCCC. As a past chair of the Hematopathology subcommittee of the National Cancer Institute’s Mouse Models of Human Cancers Consortium, he contributes expertise in molecular pathogenesis and classification of hematopoietic neoplasms in both mouse and human systems.
- Harvard College A.B. in Biochemical Sciences (1986)
- University of California San Francisco M.D. in Medicine (1991)
- Laboratory Medicine Residency at UCSF (1991-1993)
- Hematopathology Fellowship at UCSF (1997-1998)
Scott Kogan's research spans hematologic malignancies, with a focus on molecular mechanisms of leukemia initiation, gene-environment interactions in childhood leukemia, and mouse models of hematopoietic cancers. His work investigates how prenatal tobacco exposure affects RAG-mediated recombination, the role of genetic mutations like LNK/SH2B3 in juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia, and environmental factors such as thirdhand smoke in leukemogenesis. He also explores DNA repair pathways, immune responses to radiation exposure, and drug toxicity in clinical settings.
Scientific awards include the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award, Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Scholar Award, and multiple teaching honors. His publications highlight cross-disciplinary approaches combining genetics, toxicology, and immunology.
