Scott K. Taylor is a Professor of History at the University of Kentucky, where he has served since 2012. Previously, he taught at Siena College for 11 years. He holds a PhD from the University of Virginia (2001) and an AB from the University of Chicago (1992). His research focuses on early modern Europe, particularly Spain, with expertise in the history of drugs and alcohol, social history, and urban life. Taylor is affiliated with the Health, Society and Populations History program.
His current projects include analyzing James Boswell’s journals to study drug and alcohol use in 18th-century Europe and a new project on 18th-century Madrid’s street life. He advises graduate students in early modern Spanish history and the history of drugs and alcohol.
Selected publications include Ambivalent Pleasures: Soft Drugs and Embodied Anxiety in Early Modern Europe (2024) and Honor and Violence in Golden Age Spain (2008). His articles explore topics like coffee’s cultural role and rethinking military revolution narratives in Spanish history.
