Dr. Scott Henkel is an Associate Professor in the Departments of English and African American and Diaspora Studies at the University of Wyoming, serving as the Wyoming Excellence Chair in the Humanities and Director of the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research (WIHR) and the Democracy Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, an M.A. from Ohio University, and a B.A. from Western Michigan University. His research focuses on literatures of the Americas, transnational American studies, democracy, labor, slavery, and public humanities. Henkel’s work bridges critical theory, political movements, and complex systems analysis.
He directs the WIHR, overseeing programs such as the Humanities Research Group and the Democracy Laboratory, which aim to strengthen democratic engagement. His publications include Direct Democracy: Collective Power, the Swarm, and the Literatures of the Americas (2017), winner of the C. L. R. James Award, and Democracy Under Construction (2020). He has received grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities, among others.
Henkel’s teaching spans courses on democracy in literature, slavery and resistance, and banned books. He mentors students through thesis advising and honors programs. His leadership roles include the University of Wyoming’s Strategic Planning Initiative and the Working-Class Studies Association. He actively engages the public through podcasts, lectures, and media appearances, advocating for the humanities’ role in societal challenges.
