Scott G. Bruce is Professor of History at Fordham University and Editor of Traditio: Studies in Ancient and Medieval History, Thought, and Religion. His research examines medieval religious culture, monastic traditions, and concepts of the afterlife from late antiquity to the central Middle Ages.
Bruce's scholarship focuses on Cluniac monasticism, hagiography, and the medieval reception of classical/patristic traditions. His recent work explores the vitality of the dead in medieval societies, including ghost stories, visions of hell, and evolving concepts of the afterlife.
As editor, Bruce has compiled influential anthologies including The Penguin Book of Hell (2018), The Penguin Book of the Undead (2016), and The Penguin Book of Demons (2024). These collections trace cultural conceptions of supernatural phenomena across three millennia of Western thought.
Bruce has held visiting positions including Edwin C. and Elizabeth A. Whitehead Membership at the Institute for Advanced Study (2024-25). His current research investigates the Latin reception of Greek patristic literature in medieval monasteries.
