Scott Edgar

Scott Edgar is an Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Arts at Saint Mary’s University, Canada. He holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2009), alongside an MA from Dalhousie University and a BA (Hon) from the University of British Columbia. His teaching focuses on the history of philosophy and critical thinking.

• Research Interests: Specializing in 19th Century German Philosophy, particularly the Marburg School Neo-Kantianism, Edgar explores themes like anti-psychologism, epistemic objectivity, and the philosophy of mathematics and science. His work traces how Kantian frameworks evolved through figures like Hermann Cohen and Paul Natorp, addressing tensions between psychology, empirical science, and rationalist epistemology.
• Publications: Edgar’s scholarship spans critiques of Cassirer’s a priori conceptions, analyses of Cohen’s anti-psychologism origins, and historical studies of Neo-Kantianism’s influence on analytic philosophy. He has co-edited volumes on Ernst Cassirer and contributed to debates about logical empiricism and its Cold War political dimensions.
