Scott Bunch is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Boston University. He leads the Atomic Membrane Lab, focusing on nanomechanical properties of 2D materials like graphene. His research investigates mechanical properties, molecular transport, and applications in gas separation membranes and sensors. Bunch holds a PhD from Cornell University and is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award (2011) and the 2025 Dean’s Faculty Leadership Fellowship.
Education: PhD, Cornell University.
Research Interests: Experimental nanomechanics of 2D materials, graphene adhesion, molecular transport through porous graphene, and the design of ultrathin membranes for gas/liquid separation. The lab’s signature work involves 'atomic drum' devices—graphene-sealed microcavities that enable precise measurements of mechanical and transport properties.
Awards:
- Dean’s Faculty Leadership Fellow (2025)
- NSF CAREER Award (2011)
Advising & Labs: Supervised over 10 PhD/Master’s students, including Metehan Calis (2023), David Lloyd (2020), and Lauren Cantley (2017). The Atomic Membrane Lab actively recruits students for projects in nanomechanics and 2D materials.
Affiliations: Member of the Materials by Design and Photonics & Optical Systems groups at BU.
